Our Topics
In Dr Seuss class we focus on six main topics, which are taught over the year, and the topics incorporate all 7 areas of Learning and Development.
The topic for term 1 is Wonderful Me where the children focus on exciting things that have happened to them in their lives.
The topic for term 2 is Celebrations where the children focus on Bonfire Night, Birthdays, Remembrance Day and Christmas. We also focus on the story ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ by our namesake Dr Seuss.
The topic for term 3 is Starry, Starry Night where we jump into our rockets and zoom off to the moon.
The topic for term 4 is Once Upon a Time where we jump into Storyland and meet the characters from Traditional Tales. We also focus on a variety of Traditional Tales from around the World and Traditional Tales with a difference.
The topic for term 5 is Ready Steady Grow where we learn all about plants. This includes naming parts of a plant and understanding what they need to grow.
The topic for term 6 is All Creatures Great and Small where we learn all about animals including mammals, insects, fish, reptiles and birds.
Phonics is taught daily using the structure of the systematic synthetic programme ‘Little Wandle Letters & Sounds’. Children also participate in Reading Practice Sessions with a teacher. The books the children will be reading in these sessions are the Big Cat Books. These books are carefully matched to the child’s current reading level. The children will read the same book three times a week where they focus on different reading skills in each session. At the end of the week the books are sent home where the children can practise their reading with their families.
PE is taught every Tuesday and the children learn a wide range of skills including catching, kicking and throwing a ball.
We look forward to welcoming you into Dr. Seuss Class!

Timetable
Our timetable can be downloaded below. Here, parents and pupils have the opportunity to view the class schedule to see the day-to-day routine including the range of curriculum that is covered. We have found that children with SEND have responded well to visually seeing the structure of the day ahead.
Terms/Topic Information
Our learning this year will be based on the topics below and will change accordingly each term. Parents will receive a Topic Web, Knowledge Organiser and recommended Reads at the start of each term informing them about what the children will be learning. This will also be available below to download.
At Rosherville Church of England Academy, we have introduced ‘50 Things Before I Leave Rosherville Primary’, this helps to give children the opportunity to tick off big items throughout their primary years. The experiences and activities EYFS get to complete include:
#17 Explore a Forest
#29 Visit a Farm
#33 Compete as a Part of a Team
#47 Lay on the Grass and Watch the Clouds
More Infomation about the subjects can be found on our curriculum pages.
